Mount Holyoke’s Community-Based Learning and Psychology and Education departments collaborate with the Valley Opportunity Council in Chicopee, Read Write Now in Springfield, and The Care Center in Holyoke to give students the opportunity to volunteer as teaching assistants and tutors.

This project involves training and placing Mount Holyoke students with local Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs. ABE programs are for adults who are 16 years and older and have left school but want to continue their education. Adults enrolled in ABE programs have a 9th grade education or lower. Mount Holyoke student tutors assist ABE teachers in adult basic education courses including GED preparation, and English for non-native speakers.
